I stepped onto Randolph College's campus and heard a bunch of students talking about the amazing food was at a place called "The Commons". Of course I just had to check it out considering I hadn't eaten anything and had been on the road for five hours that day. As I walked into "The Commons" I hear music of which I am not familiar with (later on a student told me it was Jay-Z playing) blaring through the rooms. The cafeteria people are dancing as if no body is watching and singing at the top of their lungs banging pots and pans with a smile on their face. The students form a line and walk around the different counters so I followed as my eyes gazed over all the food. Back where I come from we did not eat unhealthy foods and sticked to salad and fruits. It seemed that all the food there was the complete opposite. I had never seen such food like this. I wondered how the people of Randolph College didn't become obese. I finally decided my dinner would consist of something called a "peanut butter chunk brownie" and "pasta with vodka sauce". The pasta was swirly and looked almost fake and the brownie looked like dirt. I was nervous to try it. Next stop was finding a seat. Everyone was separated by different tables almost by category. A group of boys with long hair that carried funny sticks with nets on the end sat at one table, a group of girls dressed in all pink sat at another, and another group that had books piled high and laptops sat at a completely different one. I had never seen this before, and was scared I would pick the wrong table. What kind of place is this...

  1. Its very interesting to see that this college has cliques, also i find it interesting that you didnt know what a lacrosse stick looked like. I am interested to know if you ended up liking the food because apparently it has a very good reputation yet you said it was a little intimidating.

  2. I have never thought about the sitting pattern of the dinning table. It is really interesting to see what you wrote about sitting pattern in the end! May be next time, I will pay attention to that.......

  3. I liked how you described your first impression of the food when you saw it. Instead of just saying you got a brownie and pasta you described what you thought of the appearance of the food. You were very observant when you went to get food. I never noticed there was music playing and the workers were singing along.

  4. A good first post! I also liked the descriptions of the food--thought that was funny. I also thought the descriptions of the people dancing and banging pans was good--like no one was watching gave me a real feel for what they were doing. I was bummed, though, that you never told us how the food actually was? Why not go further?

  5. I am amazed to read this piece of writing! Considering how very different the food here is from back home in Palestine, I still would say that I really, really enjoy it daily. My American roommate, from North Carolina, also agrees that they serve very delicious food in the Commons. So, I am just getting surprised.
I, too, want to say that it was novel for me to see the people of a cafeteria dancing as if no one is watching! But still, I enjoyed it and I think they try to have fun and look kindly to the students being served food.

  6. This was one of my favorite blogs. I loved all the descriptive words of the food that was being served. The description of how the people working there was perfect because they are always so happy to be there. I hope you like the food as much as I do!
